Ashenda is a spectacular, joyous public cultural festival celebrated predominantly in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Taking place officially from August 22nd to August 31st every year, it marks the end of the two-week fasting period known as Filseta (commemorating the ascension of the Virgin Mary). While deeply rooted in Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, Ashenda is uniquely known as the holiday of girls and young women, giving them center stage to celebrate their freedom, culture, and sisterhood.

The festival takes its name from the tall, green "Ashenda" grass that the girls weave into beautiful, skirt-like fringes worn around their waists over stunning traditional white cotton dresses. The visual spectacle is breathtaking: the girls showcase intricate, traditional braided hairstyles (known as Quno) and adorn themselves with heavy, eye-catching silver and gold jewelry.

During the festival, groups of young girls and women gather in the streets, playing hand drums and singing traditional Ashenda songs. They dance their way from house to house and through village squares, offering blessings to the community and collecting small gifts and donations in return. Similar beautiful variations of this festival, known as Shadey, Ashendye, and Solel, are also celebrated in neighboring parts of the Amhara region.
